Based on creator Michael Lannan’s short, Lorimer, new HBO series Looking jumps into the lives of a group of gay friends living in San Francisco. With Andrew Haigh (of the critically-acclaimed Weekend) co-executive producing and directed a handful of episodes from the first season, Looking is shaping up to be something of a Girls for the East Coast. Looking premieres on HBO on 19th January 2014.

‘Community’ returns for season five with Dan Harmon back behind the helm

After the show petered in seasons three and four, the return of creator and showrunner Dan Harmon might just revive NBC’s cult comedy Community. Back with an hour-long special, things are about to get weird again, but that’s what made Community so great. With the likes of Alison Brie and Donald Glover in their ranks, though the latter is not a full-time cast member this season, the show proves great charisma can really go a long way. Season five of Community premieres on January 2nd.

Spacey and co. are back for season two of political drama ‘House of Cards’

Netflix’s breakthrough original programming, House of Cards, premieres season 2 on Valentine’s Day 2014, although they don’t give too much away with this first teaser. Suitably mysterious, the teaser is little more than a silhouette of Robin Wright, but rest assured things will get interesting from the off. As Francis (Spacey) and Claire (Wright) continue their ruthless rise to the top, threats are starting to mount on all fronts as a binge of new House of Cards episodes will offer an alternative evening’s entertainment come release date. All 13 episodes from House of Cards: Season 2 will be available to stream on Netflix from Valentine’s Day 2014.

‘Girls’ returns with a new season that’ll hopefully lighten the tone after a gloomy second outing

The magnificent first season of Girls was a breath of fresh air when it premiered April 2012, but the bleak second grew tiresome by the end. Hopefully the third season will see the return to more of a light-hearted tone and a little more humour as the girls are all pretty much back to square one. Girls returns to HBO on January 12, 2014.

Starring Karl Urban as a snarling cop who’s not so thrilled to be paired with a lifelike, synthetic partner (Michael Ealy), the show is executive produced by J.J. Abrams alongside Fringe showrunner J.H. Wyman. Tasked with investigating a cover-up in the futuristic world, Almost Human premieres on Fox this Sunday, with episode two following the day after.

From Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D. Moore, Helix follows a team of scientists from the Center for Disease Control as they head to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate reports of an outbreak. From gloopy, black blood to creatures lurking in the shadows, it’s fair to say the CDC team have bitten off more than they could chew, not least in mysterious facility head Dr. Hiroshi Hataki (Hiroyuki Sanada). Helix premieres Friday 10th January, 2014, on Syfy.

We spent the evening in a real asylum to celebrate the release of ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’ on DVD

I’d never seen American Horror Story before, but in a creepy old asylum under the cover of dark was probably the perfect introduction. Show the rest of this post…

With each season exploring a self-contained storyline, the second takes place in an asylum, the Briarcliff Mental Institution for treatment and housing of the criminally insane. As you might have guessed from the title, American Horror Story will have you on edge, and as tense, dramatic and unnerving as any Hollywood horror, the show has real punch.

We delved into the first two episodes introducing the stern Sister Jude (Jessica Lange), in charge of the asylum, sadistic Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell) and unwitting patients lesbian journalist Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) and accused serial killer Kit Walker (Evan Peters). Though watching at home probably won’t match the experience at The Asylum, after two episodes I’m hooked, and after most of the new US fall shows turning me off after just 20 minutes, American Horror Story: Asylum comes highly recommended.

American Horror Story: Asylum is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.

Stephen Merchant is looking for love in LA in new HBO comedy ‘Hello Ladies’

Though his roles as the stereotypical Englishman in a number of recent Hollywood comedies haven’t been hugely successful, hopefully that’s about to change for Stephen Merchant. The co-creator of The Office comes to HBO for comedy series Hello Ladies, following his character as he looks for love in modern day LA. It’s a concept so open to stereotypes but given that Merchant co-created and will co-write the show alongside The Office US scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, plus HBO’s history in the genre, we can expect a witty take. Hello Ladies premieres Sunday 29th September on HBO.

Adam Samberg goes back to TV in Police comedy ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

Though Adam Samberg film career has been patchy over the last couple of years – and hopefully he’ll never be dragged into doing another Adam Sandler movie again – projects like Celeste And Jesse Forever and his work on SNL prove he’s an undeniably talented actor. In Police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Samberg returns to the small screen as goony but gifted detective Jake Peralta. Used to playing around all day while still solving the crimes that are put on his plate, when a new captain takes charge of his precinct, things are about to change, and at last, Peralta might have to actually grow up. Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Tuesdays on Fox, premiering September 17th.
