Interstellar-4

At long last we have a full-length trailer for Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated new film, Interstellar. Starring Matthew McConaughey as a scientist who must make a journey through a wormhole to save mankind, as well as Jessica Chastain and Nolan regular Michael Caine, the new trailer gives a much greater sense of the arc of McConaughey’s character, and gives a glimpse of where the story might be headed. All information has been pretty closely guarded up to now, but the trailer gives just about the right amount away, while teasing bigger things to come, particularly with a very 2001-esque shot of a rotating space station. We’re very much looking forward to this one. Hopefully Nolan can find that mix of heart and spectacle that his best work has always had. Interstellar hits cinemas on November 7th.

The debut from writer-director Gia Coppola, Palo Alto follows a bunch of high school teenagers in the throngs of adolescence. Starring Emma Roberts in the lead, the film is based on James Franco’s collection of short stories of the same name and Franco also stars as Roberts’ teacher. Not before long, the lines of parent and teacher become blurred as Coppola’s cast go out of their way to find trouble. Though the parallels to Franco’s real-life Instagram scandal are uncomfortable, Palo Alto got stellar reviews out of Telluride, Venice and Tribeca film festivals and hits theatres across the US tomorrow.

Directed by Kelly Reichardt (Meek’s Cutoff), drama/thriller Night Moves stars Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard as three radical environmentalists who join forces to blow up a dam. But when doubt start to creep in and each grows paranoid and distrustful, their mission is put at risk as their ideals face fierce questioning. With an interesting plot and suspenseful tone, if the three leads can hold their own, Night Moves could be a breakthrough success for Kelly Reichhardt when it hits theatres May 30th.

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is a groundbreaking story that sees two young children grow up on-screen. Brought together each year to shoot just a handful of scenes, the movie watches a family evolve as its two children move through childhood to adolescence to becoming young adults. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and newcomers Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater, with a soundtrack that equally spans the years. Boyhood hits theatres July 11th.

Expected to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, David Cronenberg’s follow-up to the disappointing Cosmopolis looks like he’s back to his very best. Starring Mia Wasikowska as a young woman who goes to Hollywood and secures a job as personal assistant to an actress played by Julianne Moore, their misadventures take in Robert Pattinson and John Cusack along the way and a child star earning a fortune for his mother. Maps To The Stars is out in France May 21st and the US and UK later in the year.

Along similar thematic lines to our personal Fincher favourite, Zodiac, Gone Girl tells the story of a man (Ben Affleck) whose wife (Rosamund Pike) goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary, but when the mystery surrounding her disappearance persists, the attention turns back towards Affleck. Also starring Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris, Missi Pyle, Casey Wilson and Emily Ratajkowski, Gone Girl hits theatres October 3rd.

With Bryan Singer back at the helm, Wolverine is sent back in time to get the gang together as X-Men of present and future team up in Day of Future Past. Alongside a bunch of characters making their film debut, the X-Men are drawn into an terrifying battle to change the past in order to save their future. With Wolverine coming over all Nick Fury, Day of Future Past feels a little like The Avengers meets Terminator, though as long as they maintain some of the indie spirit of First Class and not throw everything at the screen like they did with X-Men: Last Stand, the movie might just pull through. Then again, the cast list is as long as any film in recent memory. Here’s hoping it’s good when X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres May 23rd.

Jon Favreau gets back to his indie roots with SXSW-favourite ‘Chef’

One of our picks from this year’s SXSW festival, Jon Favreau turned down Iron Man 3 to make this movie and it was a great decision. Getting back to the spirit of his early independent movie, Chef tells the story of chef Roy Choi, who after a calamitous reaction to a bad review, quits his job and goes out on the road by starting a food truck. Full of heart passion, Chef features a few entertaining cameos along the way, plus great perfrmances from Jon Favreau, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale and Emjay Anthony and hits theatres May 9th in the States and June 18th in the UK.

Michael Fassbender’s next role is more of a left-field role that we’ve been used to of late. Playing the titular character, and poet and musician, Frank wears a giant fake head and lives in a hyper-artistic world. Making way for some unique comedic situations, the film also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy, from director Leonard Abrahamson (What Richard Did). Frank hits theatres in the UK on 9th May.

Marvel turn up the comedy for their big summer release ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Not foreign to humour in their superhero action films, Marvel appear to be making a comedy with a side of action in their summer blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, plus the vocal talents of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, the band of misfits come together to form the titular force and stop villain Ronan. The film is co-written and direct by James Gunn, whose back catalogue won’t instill too much confident, but hopes are still high when Guardians of the Galaxy hits theatres August 1st.
