After a number of sequels and prequels, Pixar hope to quash fears they’re running out of fresh ideas with two original properties due for release in 2015. Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc, Up) helms the first, as Inside Out steps inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley. Uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco, the film watches on as Riley’s emotions fight it out as she deals with a new city, new house and new school. Voiced by a stellar cast of Amy Poehler (Joy), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger), Mindy Kaling (Disgust) and Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Inside Out will hit theatres June 19th, 2015.

Paul Thomas Anderson takes on a trippy ’60s crime noir with adaptation ‘Inherent Vice’

Based on the Thomas Pynchon novel, Paul Thomas Anderson writes and directs Inherent Vice, set in the swinging, psychedelic ’60s. Following private investigator Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) as he investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, Katherin Waterston, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin and Reese Witherspoon complete an all-star cast. Shaping up to be one of Anderson’s trippier films, crime noir Inherent Vice will hit theatres December 12th in the States and January 30th, 2015 in the UK.

His fourth film in six years, writer/director Jason Reitman continues his rapid run of movies with drama, Men, Women & Children. Starring Rosemarie DeWitt, Judy Greer, Ansel Elgort, Emma Thompson and an Adam Sandler still hoping to prove Punch-Drunk Love wasn’t a one-off, the film explores how the internet has changed the way a group of high school teenagers and their parents see themselves and interact with one another. After the tonal shifts between Reitman’s recent films, it will be interesting to see where Men, Women & Children falls when it hits theatres later this year.

After Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two over the last 16 years, for his next film, director George Miller is going back to the franchise that first made his name, Mad Max. Set against an apocalyptic backdrop, Mad Max: Fury Road sees Tom Hardy take over from Mel Gibson in the titular role, having to fight through a series of torturous situations. Miller has called the film “almost a continuous chase” so hopefully he hasn’t forgetten how it’s done after so long away from this type of film when Mad Max: Fury Road hits theatres May 15th, 2015.

The directorial debut from Jeff Baena (co-writer on I Heart Huckerbees), Life After Beth hits theatres August 15th in the US, October 3rd in the UK.

The feature length debut from writer/director Theodore Melfi, Bill Murray stars in St. Vincent as a hard-living, alcoholic gambler who finds a friend in the most surprising of people. Finding himself looking after his neighbour’s 12-year-old kid, Oliver (Lieberher), St. Vincent takes the boy along his usual stops for the day, a race track, strip club and local dive bar, as the unlikely duo bond and bring the best out of each other. St. Vincent hits theatres on October 24th.

Brad Pitt is hardened to the horrors of war in David Ayer’s new epic ‘Fury’

Set during the final few months of WWII, David Ayer’s (End of Watch) Fury follows army sergeant Wardaddy (Pitt), a Sherman tank and her five-man team on a treacherous mission behind enemy lines. With an exciting cast that includes the aforementioned Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs and Michael Peña, much of this first trailer focuses on the relationship between grizzled veteran Wardaddy and Lerman’s new recruit, Norman Ellison. Fury is in theatres from November 14th.

Set on a futuristic Earth ravaged by a new ice age, Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) Snowpiercer follows the survivors of a botched global warming experiment that has wiped out most of the planet’s population. Based on French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, Earth’s only remaining inhabitants are those on a massive train, the Snowpiercer, endlessly circling the globe on a never-ending track. But inside, with the lower classes in the back of the train, and the rich in the front, an uprising has started as revolutionaries start a bloody fight to move forward from the last carriage. Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer and Tilda Swinton star as Snowpiercer hit theatres in the States on 27th June.

Winning Bennett Miller (Moneyball) the award for Best Director at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Foxcatcher sees Steve Carell in a career-defining dramatic role as convicted murderer, multimillionaire, and member of the famed du Pont family, John Eleuthére du Pont. Striking up a relationship with wrestlers Mark and Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo), the film follows du Pont as he mentors the brothers and attempts to build the international profile of US wrestling. With Miller’s previous experience with sport in Moneyball, and the stellar reviews coming out of Cannes, expect an high profile release when Foxcatcher hits theatres November 14th.

A kid builds his own superhero team in Marvel’s Disney-animated debut ‘Big Hero 6’

The first animated Marvel feature film from Disney, Big Hero 6 centres on a young robotics prodigy, Hiro Hamada, who with the help of his friends, builds his own superhero team to try and save his futuristic hometown of San Fransokyo. The trailer already shows off the film’s lough out loud humour, which will star Josh Hutcherson, Freddie Highmore, T.J. Miller, Maya Rudolph and Jamie Chung. Big Hero 6 hits theatres in the States on November 7th and in the UK in January 2015.
