The London List Abroad: Du Pain et des Idées, The Best Boulangerie in ParisThe London List

By Sam Bathe on 29 Mar 2013

Just five minutes north of Place de la République, at the corner of rue Yves Toudic and rue de Marseille lies the wonderful boulangerie Du Pain et des Idées. Show the rest of this post…

Specialising in fantastic breads, from sourdough to olive oil to baguettes and soft brioche, owner Christophe Vasseur comes from a long line of bakers, while the corner location has been home to a bakery since 1889, and the tradition shines through. However, it’s the wonderful croissants that really impressed. Alongside a playful range of escargots with praline, pistachio, nougat, cassis and raisin fillings, I picked out a banana pain au chocolat, which was quite simply the best pastry of my entire life. I’ll be going back, for every breakfast next time.

The first in a series about a journey to source one of the most luxurious materials in the world, directed by The Inoue Brothers, The Gold Of The Andes explores the folklore of the Incas, who believed the Vicuña animals were reincarnations of young maidens rewarded with a coat of pure gold in return for giving life to their civilisation.

A Few Weeks In Peru

Described by director Cole Graham as simply “brought my camera on a trip with my brother and grandpa”, this video is so much more. It’s not just an ode to Peru, it’s about the bond of going on holiday with your closest family.

There’s a lot to keep you busy in NYC, but director Andrew Wonder and urban explorer Steve Duncan go out of their way to make their own fun. Not to be tried at home, or in New York City for that matter, Andrew and Steve take extraordinary trips into the subways and tunnels no-one gets to see. And it makes for extraordinary viewing.

Whitepod Resort, Switzerland

Reminiscent of the amazing Treehotel, in Sweden, Whitepod Resort, however, is just one hour out of Geneva, Switzerland, offering a camp of 15 dome-shaped pods, containing a luxury bedroom, bathroom, and at the front, one of the most breathtaking views across the Alps you’ll ever see. Show the rest of this post…

Each equipped with wood-burning stoves for heat, they’re anchored on a wooden platform and raised above the cold snow and ground beneath. With a chalet at the centre, where guests are served breakfast and dinner, and skiing literally off the porch, this ranks pretty high on my holiday wish list before spring.

Renting a car in San Francisco before setting out on a two-week drive across the whole of the United States, Mike Matas and his girlfriend took in some 3,000 miles of roadside views en route to New York, which when condensed into this quick three-minute video, sure makes you want to repeat the trip, as best of all, it was purely recreation.

Short Film: In South America

Clemens Krüger, Vincent Urban and Stefan Templer travel a lot, which is great, but that they shoot each expedition is even better. At the start of 2012 the threesome started a journey to Argentina, hitting Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil en route, all in their old, rusty Land Rover. And with dSLRs on hand, the wind, emptiness, hustle and bustle, animals, deserts and waterfalls, try not to want to cruise South America after this. Edited by Vincent Urban.

Continuing their run of wonderful videos, Rapha take to the streets of St. Petersburg in Russia with rider Jonathan McGuinness playing muse. Though Russia hits some bitter temperatures in the winter some of the architecture is perfect for two wheels. This is the way brands should be pushing their products, by Mark Jenkinson & Ultan Coyle.

The Perennial Plate returns from two (delicious) weeks in Japan with a video that’ll get your mouth watering, and few extra pounds on the waistline. I forgot how delicious their food was, yakitori, sushi, ramen, noodles, all of it.

Short Film: Islands

While at times it feels a little too much like you’re encroaching on Diego Contreras and his wife’s honeymoon, the natural environment is just so beautiful you’ll find it hard to turn his Islands off. Shot on the U.S. Virgin Islands.
