Betting friend, and fellow director, Errol Morris that he’d eat his own shoe if Morris finished a movie on pet cemeteries, upon completion of Gates Of Heaven, iconic filmmaker set about his forfeit. The young Herzog boiled the shoe for fives hours with garlic, herbs and stock before gobbling down all but the sole, and discussing film, art and life in the process. What a remarkable man and amazing film, directed by Les Blank back in the late 1970s.
