Making countless top 10 lists last year, no one can doubt Synecdoche, New York’s claim for greatness, and writer/director Charlie Kaufman most certainly has a masterpiece on his hands, but whether you’ll enjoy it is a whole other question.
About a theatre writer who receives a MacArthur genius grant to fund a new play that will define his lifetime, years on, the play remains unfinished and has turned into a secondary version of his own life. If you are prepared to invest the time and effort into Synecdoche, New York’s somewhat all over the place narrative, you’ll get more out of it than you could ever imagine, but it’s certainly not for everyone.
