‘Reckless’ is much more than your average sports video

Bookended by an inspirational voiceover, director Leo Zuckerman shot Reckless for the Intersection competition at The World Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler, challenging filmmakers to shoot and edit in seven days. First featuring the sportsmen out of their comfort zone and off the slopes, it’s not long before they pick up their boards and skis for a medley of increasingly elaborate and impressive tricks and jumps. Plus the obligatory slo-mo edits.

So stylishly directed by filmmaker Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond The Pines), the new 60 second spot for Dick’s Sporting Goods, gets back to the grit of sport on the field of play, not the spectacle surrounding it. So much tension and drama packed into just a minute, hopefully Cianfrance makes more adverts.

Produced to promote Nike Free Run+, the sports manufacturer has produced this cute video of two lovers a world apart, but with running shoes on their feet. Needless to say the guy is a little out of shape so it’s up to the girl to cross the country on foot, and the results pull surprisingly on your heartstrings. We need more like this from Nike.

Quiksilver USA’s Balaram Stack and Chase Wilson head north to join up with local Raph Bruhwiler for three days of surf in Tofino, B.C. Taking in huge waves and a few killer whales, it was a pretty amazing trip, however brief, as the Canadian surf proves itself to be a lot more than just onrushing water. Directed and edited by Adam Dewolfe.

The story of 12 homeless men as they prepare for the 2009 Street Soccer USA Cup, Street Soccer: New York “shows how sports can change people’s lives and it highlights the effectiveness of the Street Soccer USA organization, which helps the homeless get off the streets, find jobs and reconnect with family members.” Street Soccer: New York is an on-going Kickstarter project, help them fund the finished film here. Help worth giving.

The most famous motorsport in the world, Porsche used to dominate Le Mans, the remarkable 24-hour race designed to test a driver’s mental stamina as well as their driving skills and speed of the car. In anticipation of their much-talked about return to the circuit in 2014, they’ve put together a little video highlighting their early years behind the wheel at Le Mans, and boy were they something. Hopefully their return will be just as entertaining too.
