Frankenweenie is Tim Burton’s forthcoming animated remake of his own 1984 short film of the same name (which was live action), and will be presented in 3D. The character images you see below have just been released, and show off the film’s highly-stylised look, complete with moody monochrome visuals.
The story concerns the death of Victor Frankenstein’s (Charlie Tahan) dog Sparky, who is later brought back to life by his owner through the power of science, and goes on to cause mayhem in the town. Regular Burton collaborators Helena Bonham-Carter (as Elsa van Helsing) and Danny Elfman, composing the music, return, and those who have seen Burton’s 2005 film The Corpse Bride will be immediately at home with the visual design.
That familiarity will hopefully help, rather than hinder, the production. Here’s hoping Burton’s lower-key release in 2012 (after Dark Shadows) will prove to be his most successful, even it seems to cover familiar territory for the director.
