Wizards, like Vampires, are hot stuff right now. The all-encompassing behemoth that is the Harry Potter franchise is still two films away from finishing, whilst we’ve had all manner of magic related films popping up recently (e.g The Last Airbender (sort of magic) and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice). There’s also some franchise called The Lord of the Rings (which is soon to get its two long-delayed sequels). Incidentally, the image above is from Disney’s The Sword in the Stone, which has been used to iterate the fact that wizards are actually not a new invention. The wizard pictured above is Merlin, the archetypal wand-waver who is now heading back to the big screen thanks to Working Title.
Making things ‘modern’ is something that often happens when studios are looking for a new slant on an existing character/franchise/idea. (On the flip side, they also like to throws things back in time. Anyone remember The Spaceman and King Arthur?). Working Title’s Merlin film will bring the character into our times, ironically thanks to a wave of wizard enthusiasm generated by projects that themselves, knowingly or not, drew inspiration or influence from the character. There isn’t enough information available yet to know if this will be any good, but we do it’s being penned by Jay Basu (Song of Songs).
