W magazine have unveiled (along with an interesting set visit and interviews) something that fans of Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy and the recently released Swedish adaptations have been waiting for for a while; the first shots of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Ever since the announcement was made last winter that Mara, who had a minor but important role in Fincher’s acclaimed The Social Network, would take on the role that Noomi Rapace had made her own, the film world has been intrigued to see her transformation. Well, now we have our first look at the new Lisbeth Salander, and on first impression it’s looking like a good one. The shots show Mara looking suitably badass but also a bit more vulnerable than Rapace seemed to be. It’s a pleasing update on an adaptation that is building a nice head of steam in anticipation of its release late this year. Hopefully Fincher can work his magic with material that seems right up his alley.
