Every Spin-Off Deserves A Good Spin-Off

First there was X-Men starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Then there was Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, AKA Deadpool. And now The Hollywood Reporter claims there will indeed be a Deadpool spin-off movie. Ryan Reynolds is slated to return in the role he had been “fan-cast” in for many years previous to finally taking up his part in Wolverine. Though the success of the role is arguably dependable on who you’re talking to (Comic Book fan? Film acting fan? Sword action fan?), Reynolds has the chops to carry a movie on his comedic timing alone, though box office performances of his previous films may disagree.

Deadpool, the character, is very suitable for film service, as he can be both generic (sword fighter, mercenery, shoots guns) and unique (breaks fourth wall, bounces between good and bad, references pop culture). Without spoiling the plot of Wolverine, it will be interesting to see if the Deadpool picture is set before or after the first Origins film, and whether it will reference what happens in Wolverine. All we at Fan the Fire can hope is that its got action and is funny. And maybe another character to spin-off into a third new movie, we’re thinking Deadpool’s sometime sidekick Cable.
