Lauded as a return to form for director Woody Allen, gritty romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona is an often uncomfortable watch as when holidaying in Spain, two Americans stay with an artist they meet by chance in Barcelona.

With twists and turns thrown up in the love triangle, when painter Juan’s ex-wife turns up, the electric atmosphere at times takes a turn for the worse. Very watchable, if not mesmerising, Vicky Cristina Barcelona isn’t the masterpiece Penélope Cruz’s Oscar might suggest but it is at least an accomplished, and grounded, picture.
