I’m not sure if the original Ice Age deserved a sequel, never mind number 2, The Meltdown and certainly not last outing, Dawn Of The Dinosaurs. But alas, money talks, and here we are with Ice Age: Continental Drift at our door and yet another drab 90 minutes parents shouldn’t waste their money on.
Continental Drift relies on Ice Age’s recurring gags more than ever, and despite trying to play up the emotional angle, everything just feels tired. This time Manny, Sid and Diego find themselves cast away from their families on a chunk of iceberg, having to make a deal with a devious pirate gang to get back to the mainland.
Technically, Continental Drift is fine. The voice acting and animation are solid, if far from extraordinary, but the fourth film in the series now, it’s just lost any sense of originality; everything has been the same movie after movie. The squirrel never gets the acorns, we get it, the jokes just aren’t funny any more, not that they ever had you up in raptures. Apparently Fox are making a fifth, and people wonder what’s pushing originality out of Hollywood…
