The Town’s Rebecca Hall takes centre stage in James Blake’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You, a track from Blake’s 2011 EP Enough Thunder. Directed by Seb Edwards. As ever it’s a very haunting and memorable effort.
Released for this year’s Record Store Day, LCD Soundsystem covered Franz Ferdinand’s Live Alone, although it’s only now that they’re put together a video for it too. Directed by Lustix, the trippy visuals and city shots work well.
While DJ Shadow’s latest album The Less You Know, The Better stutters a little from top to bottom, the video for single Scale It Back is something else altogether. Directed by Ewan Jones Morris and Casey Raymond takes the wonderfully geeky concept and runs with it. Inspired by a memory sequence created by the amazing Ben Pridmore.
A self-initiated personal project, Andreas Wannerstedt’s video revolves around a machine that has the power of creating new, miniature universes. “What would mankind do if they possessed the power of creating new worlds? Probably use it for creating some kind of decorative snow globe.” Hugely insightful stuff, I’m sure you’d all agree.
Making their long-anticipated comeback with album Soft Universe, PNAU return in 2012 and find single Unite Us out early February on Ministry Of Sound. They’ve taken to a more serious sound, but hopefully it’ll suit them well.
With the film incoming and the soundtrack already available digitally, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross tease their cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ frontwoman Karen O. Naturally the visual collage was crafted by David Fincher himself. Wets your appetite doesn’t it? The film is out in a couple of weeks.
One of the hype names in the latter half of 2011, The Weeknd make their official video debut with The Knowing, directed by Mikael Colombu. At seven minutes long, there’s a lot for fans to get their teeth into too, and they’ll bite.
Off the Vlek05/A – AMAI3/4 split 7″ – granted, not the catchiest of names – also featuring DZA and Herrmutt Lobby, Beaver & Beaver direct this wonderful video for Polimetria. The release is available now on Vlek Records.
A Bauhaus cover recorded for the band’s Late Night Tales compilation, while MGMT might still be struggling to recapture their musical form, this video directed by Ned Wenlock is magnificent. Here’s hoping their third album is closer to the duo’s debut Oracular Spectacular rather than languid follow-up Congratulations. Finger’s crossed.
