Sited on the edge of a 70-metre high cliff, Holman House sure makes a mockery of the “sea view” rooms you’ll often pay a premium for at coastal hotels. Designed by Durbach Block Jaggers, “it contains a complex series of fluid living spaces set within a meandering perimeter that arcs, folds and stretches in response to sun, landscape and views.” Spaces splay out over the cliff’s edge allowing wonderful views up and down the coast while the lower floor forms a base build from rough stone walls like an extension of the cliffs below.

Designed by Tadashi Yoshimura Architects, the Wood Old House, Nara, Japan renovated a traditional wooden town house, built 200 years ago, for a young couple and their children. Consisting of several small buildings and spot gardens, the ‘void space’ in between was is adorned by materials from the old structures.

When Threefold Architects were knocking together the plan for a mixed-use development in Whitechapel, London, blending in with the surrounding Georgian blocks wasn’t top of their list. Comprising an office and gallery space on the ground and basement floors and two residential units on the first, second and third floors, the mix-and-match, however, looks incredible, and provides a priceless from the top floor across to the City of London.

I don’t say it lightly when proclaiming this might be the nicest flat I’ve seen my whole life. Sure, there’s no swimming pool, no gold taps in the bathroom, no penthouse view over the city, but it makes up for it in so many different ways. Designed by The Brooklyn Home Company, the 5th Street Apartment makes such clever use of space with a magnificent one-room set up for the living and another bedroom to boot, never mind those glorious shelves. While the interior might leave a little to be desired, the swimming pool atop Observatory House is really all you need to see. Conceptualised by Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco and built by architect Tatiana Bilbao, with reference to the Jantar Mantar Astronomical Observatory, built in Delhi in 1724. The results are extraordinary and inspiring.

Located on Austin’s stunning Lake Travis, the longest of the Highland Lakes to the west of the famous Texan city, Tower House by Andersson-Wise Architects is one of the finest woodland cabins around. Position neatly on a gentle slope up from the water, Tower House boasts two bedrooms, each en-suite, with a vast living area and top level terrace, opening visitors up to an expansive panorama of the surrounding lake and rolling hills. Perfect to take in a hot Texan summer or cool winter with a heater to one side, the Tower House too is barely visible at ground level through the thick woodland.

Part of the Kakslauttanen Hotel, Finland, theIgloo Village Resort pushes even Sweden’s remarkable Treehotel for its money. Each igloo coming roofed by glass to allow guests to see the glorious northern lights and star-speckled sky above, the special thermal glass stays clear even as temperatures outside drop to below -30°C, with a toilet and luxury bed in the structure too so you won’t need to go anywhere before brunch, and a hot sauna and ice hole for the evening’s entertainment. Boasting a snow restaurant, ice gallery and show chapel in the resort too, the 20-igloo strong destination packs 60 beds, booking from December-January, weather pending, until the end of April.

If I was rich enough to fly out anywhere for a drink tonight, it would likely be to Hong Kong, for the luxurious Ritz-Carlton’s OZONE Bar. Designed by Wonderwall, the OZONE Bar is the highest bar in the world, position in the top floor of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, itself occupying the top 15 floors of the International Commerce Centre, Kowloon. Unexpectedly demanding a smart-casual dress code (no sandals, shorts or short-sleeved shirts), they specialise in “an exotic selection of Asian tapas and Japanese specialties” and a quite wonderful selection of cocktails. You WILL want to go back.

Available for rent through Hamptons International, the Clink Street Apartment sure provides an attractive alternative to buying in London. Though the weekly rental is a somewhat restrictive £2,250, the apartment is sumptuously design in a clean and minimalistic fashion, while avoiding the cold feel some sleek white walled properties can fall into.
