DVD Review: The Awakening

Murphy’s film is a well-handled and likable ghost story, revolving around a good performance by Rebecca Hall and, while it is not a stand out in its genre, it overcomes the odd dose of over-familiarity with confident filmmaking and some technical flair. Rebecca Hall does charming work in the lead role, much of which requires her to be silent and alone, and anchors the narrative well. After a number of good performances in recent years, Hall is beginning to stand out.

HBO’s leading torch of late and based on George R. R. Martin’s best-selling A Song of Ice And Fire series, Game Of Thrones chronicles the violent and frequently explicit fight amongst the noble families of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros for control of the Iron Throne and dominance of land as far as the eye can see. Though as times season one can be something of a handful, invest time into it and the show’s intertwining narrative will soon suck you in. Amazing ensemble cast too.

DVD Review: Midnight In Paris

Woody Allen’s latest return to form, Midnight In Paris sees the relentless filmmaker set up shop in Paris where group of friends on holiday each find their own form of solace. While his fiancée Inez busies herself shopping, eating and drinking, writer Gil Pender is transported each night back to the 1920s. While the dialogue is snappy and the actors all turn in good performances, the central conceit struggles to really take a hold of the film and in the end it falls awkwardly between the two worlds.

DVD Review: Drive

Directing the film in a neo-noir, arthouse style, Drive’s aesthetic is utterly appealing, an intoxicating mix of colour tone, wide-angle shots and naturalistic ideals. The film treats the audience with intelligence; it doesn’t lay everything out and instead leaves you to do a little legwork too. Fine work by director Nicolas Winding Refn and lead Ryan Gosling who plays a talented driver who moonlights as a getaway wheelman by night. One of 2011’s must-watch movies.
