I don’t think it would surprise anyone that Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a nonsensical experience. more
I feel like it’s been at least weeks, even months, since the last plot-free, Jason Statham action thrill-ride, good thing then (?) that Safe is just around the corner. Here he plays a “second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit”, the Russian Mafia take a dislike to him, and you know the rest. There’s a little Chinese girl for to save too.

A sumptuous collaboration between Travelteq and Cicli Maestro of Milan, every part of their bike is assembled piece by piece and the frame painted with three different layers. The front brake is a dual-pivot die-cast alloy and also packs a cold forged aluminum 48T chainwheel, high-profile 30mm double-walled aluminum rims, Brooks saddle and North Road (mounted upside down) or drop alloy handlebars, setting you back a pretty smooth €850.

Beautifully directed by Máni M. Sigfússon, with a full-length album out later this year, Úlfur is one of the most excited names to look out for in 2012. Think James Blake, only not depressing, Black Shore is a slow-moving and artfully-crafted track that builds effortlessly before a thrilling conclusion. His stuff would be great as a film score.

Directing the film in a neo-noir, arthouse style, Drive’s aesthetic is utterly appealing, an intoxicating mix of colour tone, wide-angle shots and naturalistic ideals. The film treats the audience with intelligence; it doesn’t lay everything out and instead leaves you to do a little legwork too. Fine work by director Nicolas Winding Refn and lead Ryan Gosling who plays a talented driver who moonlights as a getaway wheelman by night. One of 2011’s must-watch movies.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’s film noir sensibilities work a treat, and Alfredson helms his expansive cast with great adeptness. Many thought the 1979 BBC production of the novel precluded the need for a feature film, but Le Carré himself has commended the efforts of all involved in this adaptation, and he was right to do so. Technically the film is excellent. Alfredson’s direction is unhurried, moody and subtle, and that is backed up by Alberto Iglesias’ gently brooding score.
